I know the nursing home 'physician' where our parents retired to was performing illegal drug interaction experiments on them in return, no doubt, for payments by Big Pharma. We weren't allowed to receive a list of their medications, but my mother especially has to choke down a full handful, then they so locked up her system she would be in a catatonic condition for hours afterward. We asked a nurse friend of ours to visit during meals-and-pills, she said from what she could identify many of the pills had severe interaction warnings, but she risked getting fired if she supported us, so our only choice was to move our parents to another 'care' facility, but the attendants there stole my parents things and beat them both bad when they complained. Something to look forward to when you retire!

Just as Jim Ridgeway writes, "unruly or agitated" behavior -- or ANY kind of intensely emotional behavior -- tends to be categorized as 'psychotic' and medicated. Even more striking to a psychotherapist,(like me) is that distress, unhappiness, loss of appetite, etc. is invariably described as a unitary phenomenon -- "depression" -- and medicated. It's become almost impossible for therapists NOT to request a medication consultation if a patient feels sad over a period of time. Moreover, in my experience, while some patients benefit from anti-depressants, a lot don't. But they still feel as if they're cheating themselves if they "just talk" to a therapist, just spend time trying to understand what's going on with them.
